Robert emailed us to say:
"A little knowledge is a dangerous thing! As soon as my friends know I have done the WSET course it is always my responsibility to choose from the wine list. Unfortunately I have only completed the Intermediate Certificate and I really don't know much more than anyone else (unless they want to know a little about wine labelling laws or soil types). When it comes to choosing which one of two ACs you have never heard about go best the collection of grilled meats and poached fish they've chosen, I am completely lost!
When you ask the restaurant staff, they have often not tasted the wines themselves and have no more idea than me! Why can't we be offered more information on restaurant wine lists to avoid us losing face?"
