Here's a quick look at the rules of the game...
It's all about having fun & learning about wine.
Quaffers® Quick Rules
Objective:
Each team is the owner of a vineyard. Details of your vineyard, including the yield it produces, the price its wine fetches at market and its market value, are all on the 'Vineyard' card you select randomly at the start of the game. This information is not secret.
A circuit of the board is a year in the life of your vineyard. As you throw the dice and travel round the board the objective is to convert your yield into wine and sell it at market, accumulating as much cash and experience as you can along the way. Unconverted yield or unsold wine at the end of each circuit of the board will be deemed to have turned into vinegar and you will receive only the price of vinegar for your wine. There can be any number of circuits of the board before the game is over.
How to start:
Set up the board with piles of cards face down on the relevant spaces.
Elect one player to be "The Bank". This player should keep their own funds separate!
Select a 'Vineyard' card and keep this in front of you with the following other items:
10,000 coffers (1x 5,000, 3x1,000, 3x500, 5x100)
coloured playing piece and 5 matching 'Q' markers
coloured stand and wine card (to fill in wine characteristics as they are guessed)
tasting notepad and pen
your bottle of wine, hidden in a Quaffers® bag - have details handy for you to check guesses
tasting glass per person
requisite number of barrels representing yield, as stated on your 'Vineyard' card
Start on the 'Harvest' square and take turns (clockwise) to throw the dice and move your playing piece around the board. Highest throw starts.
How to win:
Take over 2 other vineyards; or
Be the last team to remain in the game with any assets
How to take over another vineyard:
You can take over another vineyard if:
it is up for sale
you are entitled to bid
you have enough cash to buy it and land on a 'Taste or Bid' square before any other potential purchasers.
A vineyard is up for sale if its wine has been fully identified; that is, all the categories on the wine card have been guessed correctly and filled in.
You are entitled to buy a vineyard that is for sale if you have successfully guessed at least one of the 5 categories on its wine card, and thus possess a marker from that vineyard. (It is therefore advisable to gain a marker from as many vineyards as you can.)
In order to make a bid for a vineyard you must first land on a 'Taste or Bid' square. You must have enough cash to pay the purchase price (value of the vineyard). In addition there may be a premium to pay (or a discount) as purchasers must pick up a 'Premium or Discount' card before taking over another vineyard. If the purchaser does not have enough money to pay, that team is then declared bankrupt and must leave the game. Once you bid, you are committed, whatever the Premium/Discount card does to the price.
Teams from vineyards that have been purchased, join their purchasers' team. Their cash goes into the bank, but all other assets become the assets of the acquiring team, including the yield.
Purchase a vineyard twice, and you win the game. Purchase a vineyard that itself has purchased another vineyard, and you win the game.
The Squares:
'Harvest' Each time you pass this square you will replenish your annual yield in barrels, as stated on your vineyard card.
'Taste or Bid' Land on these and you can buy a taste of another team's wine in your attempt to identify what it is. Pay 500 coffers to its owner for a taste. Record your thoughts on the tasting notepad. You can taste a team's wine as often as you like, as long as you land on a 'Taste or Bid' square first and pay 500 coffers each time. You must wait until just before your next throw of the dice to submit your guess (in secret) to the vineyard whose wine you have tasted. The vineyard owner must give the guessing team 100 coffers for every category guessed correctly (500 for the grape variety) and one of his coloured 'Q' markers to place on the guesser's playing piece. He must also fill in the correctly guessed categories on the front of his wine card. You only need one marker per vineyard, even if you guess more than one of its wine categories.
You must also land on this square if you want to buy another vineyard.
'Experience' Land on these and you must answer either a Level 1 or Level 2 Experience question from the sets on the board. (Level 1 cards are easier, Level 2 are harder.) Another team should pick up the card and read out the question. If an incorrect answer is given, then they should also read out the correct answer. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer.
Rewards for correct answers to Level 1 questions:
500 coffers from the bank; or
a free tasting of another team's wine
Rewards for correct answers to Level 2 questions:
1,500 coffers from the bank;
a permanent extra barrel of yield
an opportunity to go to market
an opportunity to ask a team to reveal one category of its wine (if the player has not already guessed any of the categories correctly)
'Bottling Permitted' You may only bottle your wine once you have passed (or landed on) this square on the first circuit of the board. To bottle your wine you must miss a throw of the dice and pay (to the bank) the bottling cost as stated on the vineyard card. Exchange your barrels for bottles. You may bottle some, or all, of your yield at any time in this way. Bear in mind that you cannot go to market unless you have bottled at least some of your yield. If you pass the 'Harvest' square and still have barrels or bottles, these must be sold to the bank as vinegar at 100 coffers per barrel/bottle.
'Go To Market' land on this square and you can go to market and sell any of your wine that has been bottled. You do not have to sell all of it at once. Pick up a 'Market Conditions' card to determine the conditions in which you are selling your wine, and what price you can thus expect for your wine. Exchange your bottles for cash from the bank. Pay 500 coffers to the bank or the incumbent team (room here for a local rule) if this square is already occupied by another team.
'Encounter' land on this square and pick up an 'Encounter' card. Do as the card instructs. It may be good or bad news.
Throwing a six:
You may either:
move six squares round the board
stay put but elect to have a free tasting from another team
stay put but go to market if you have bottled some of your yield
How to spend excess cash:
Pay 2,000 coffers to answer a Level 2 Experience card
Pay 2,000 coffers for a taste of another team's wine - pay the player not the bank
Pay 10,000 coffers and buy a bottling facility to halve your bottling costs and increase the value of your vineyard
Pay 10,000 coffers for an extra permanent barrel of yield
Purchase another vineyard if they are up for sale
Put in a Sealed Bid for a bankrupt vineyard or one being sold by another player
