What's it like?...
It transpires that drinking Western Australian in UK wine venues is easier said than done. With very few exceptions, the best of the West does not feature on wine lists, so the only option is to buy a bottle from a wine merchant and then enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. Even that can be a challenge however, but fortunately, Philglas and Swiggot comes to the rescue with a wide choice of wines from the Far West Down Under.
An excellent selection of wines from both Australia and New Zealand is presented in small but perfectly-formed premises in the heart of Clapham Junction's plethora of shops, bars and eateries. There is also a decent collection of wine accessories, but regular customers tend to call in for the friendly welcome and good advice dispensed by owners Karen and Mike Rogers.
If the wine you are after is not available in the shop, they are likely to know where to find it. On the other hand, if all you require is guidance to expand your Antipodean wine horizons, this is a great place to start. Those who hanker after the Old World are not forgotten either, with an incisive range of bottles on the shelves.
Wine is taken seriously at Philglas & Swiggot, but the ethos is best expressed in the shop's name: it's not so very serious that customers shouldn't buy and enjoy with gusto whatever takes their fancy. |
