What's it like?...
This is a favourite of City-slickers but a haven for all wine-lovers. Owned by the eponymous wine merchants, this wine bar has an excellent selection of wines by the glass and by the bottle. Both old and new world are represented in depth and the list offers many of the more unusual grape varieties.
Situated close to Bank tube, one might imagine Lay & Wheeler to be one of those places where the queue at the bar is 10 people deep and nobody ever sees the floor or the furniture because of the crowd. Surprisingly, this is not one of those places. The décor is simple, light and airy and being on two floors (the upper overlooking the lower) adds to the relaxed atmosphere.
Make a note to pop in and, if you have the 'readies', why not try some of those fine wines!
