What's it like?...
For all things gastronomic from South-Western France, you can't walk past Cellar Gascon; that is, unless you are going to their restaurant next door, or get waylaid by the deli at Comptoir Gascon nearby. The bar oozes cool but has a warm Gallic welcome for anyone remotely interested in finding out that the SouthWest contains more than just Bordeaux.
A funky map covers the end wall so you have a geographical as well as sensory perception of what you are enjoying, great sausages hang curing behind the bar, and two 19th century leather rugby balls recall the gastronomic and sporting traditions which are still strong across the region today. The native staff are passionate about their homeland, and this shows in their willingness to introduce customers to something new or different from the extensive range of wines. Just tell them what kind of wines you enjoy and they can recommend something appropriate for your palate. Wines can also be purchased on an off-licence basis.
Nobody can book here, so be in early to get a table - otherwise join the happy scrum standing alongside the bar. |
