What's it like?...
Julie's is a West London institution, here for years and very much part of the local landscape. It holds pride of place in a pretty parade of boutique shops amongst elegant town houses, and benefits from a pedestrianised area right on the doorstep. This provides ample room for outdoor seating, without the threat or pollutant of traffic. Hanging baskets and an old stone trough made into a planter are full of colourful summer blooms, and a large awning provides shade for those days when the sun burns bright (and it does happen!).

The bar itself serves as precursor to Julie's restaurant, but passersby are welcome to drop in for drinks only. Set in the front corner of the space, there are a couple of small tables and some bar stools to accommodate customers. If it's not too busy drinkers can encroach on the dining area, which is a sequence of ornate nook and crannies decorated with oriental artefacts. Julie's is something of a bohemian throwback in this respect, but has an up-to-date approach to food and drink which complements the slightly hippy chic.

For summertime drinking and dining in a peaceful setting, it's hard to go past this bar. It may be tucked away far from the madding crowd, but this makes it the ideal venue for a rendez-vous or a quiet read of the papers. And with a healthy selection of wines on the list, Julie's offers everything you might need for a tranquil time-out without having to leave town.
