What's it like?...
The main building at Denbies Wine Estate is an imposing structure, housing the winery
and the commercial arms of the business, including a shop and a café. In the central tower, to which access is gained by lift, the Gallery has an unrivalled view across acres of Denbies vines, making it the perfect spot for enjoying a glass or two of the house wine.
Orange and cream décor is more tasteful than it sounds on paper, with a central bar area surrounded by a raised platform. Seating, both formal and informal, is mostly by the windows, with some extra tables and chairs near the bar.
Although the only wines available are Denbies own, these provide a useful introduction to grape varieties and blends which predominate in the English wine industry. Because the bottles only have to make the journey up from the ground floor, on costs are minimal, which is reflected in the reasonable £2.75 for those wines available by glass. The food here is freshly made and delicious, complementing the wines perfectly.
The residents of Dorking have a gem on their doorstep, even if it only has limited opening hours. Visitors to Denbies should also be aware that the Gallery is only open to over-18s because of licensing considerations, so while children are welcome elsewhere in the complex, they will not be able to enjoy the view with their parents! |
