What's it like?...
Many of our Christmas traditions stem from Victorian times, with candle light and trimmings a strong feature of proceedings. If you could conjure up a wine bar to fit into this festive theme, then Gordon's would be close to what you might imagine.
An unassuming doorway in Villiers Street opens onto narrow stairs leading into the basement bar. You could be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled into the wrong place, but persevere! You will find a subterranean cellar of Dickensian proportions where wine and food are served to throngs of happy customers. It's full of tables and chairs of varied provenance, candles in wax-covered bottles, mysterious alcoves under bricked arches, and is imbued with the mellow ambiance that only develops over several generations of excellent hospitality from the owners.
Wines cover a broad international selection, with some interesting tipples included, but at this time of year it's the decent range of fortified wines which will attract the attention. Whether you want a quick quaff, a constitutional bracer against the deteriorating weather, or a lengthy session over several seasonal bottles, Gordon's fits the bill. Perfect for getting into the swing of Christmas (and worth returning to all year round)!
