 Wine-mine review - January 2002
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: The 2001 Onwine Australian Wine Annual
Since 1998, Australian wine writer Jeremy Oliver has compiled his annual review of the output of the Australian wine industry. It's essentially a book for Australians, but with so much wine from Down Under on British shelves, it has a place in the home of anyone who buys wine from Oz, no matter where they are based.
The premise is straightforward: a brief introduction consisting of the latest harvest reports from each growing area, tips on investing in and cellaring Australian wine and several other useful topics, moving rapidly into an alphabetical listing of producers. Each entry features a grading system for recent vintages, and an indication of the price bracket into which each wine falls.
Even more usefully for the casual Aussie wine quaffer, there is a picture of the producer's bottle labels. There is also a brief description of what each vineyard is aiming to achieve with their wines, making the book a great place to start for anyone interested in learning in greater detail about the country's vast wine industry.
It's all here, from the mass-produced right through to Penfold's Grange. Despite its relative youth as a concept, it is fast becoming the standard Australian wine guide in much the same way as some of Britain's well-known wine annuals have done. If you ever need any information about Australian vineyards and their product, this is the book for you.
