 Wine-mine review - February 2002
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: The Wine List 2002
This little book showed up on shelves just before Christmas 2001, and is planned to appear every year from now on. The basic premise is that Matthew Jukes, wine correspondant and erstwhile television wine expert (on BBC1's "Friends Like These"), sacrifices himself on behalf of his readership by tasting 25, 000 wines in order to bring them his top 250.
The results make interesting reading, and cover a wide choice of wine styles and prices. Jukes employs an enthusiastic, occasionally bombastic, informal writing style which offers helpful commentary on each wine, including tasting notes and other titbits of information about it. Having tried some of his recommendations, Quaffers® can vouch for the effectiveness of the Jukes system of classification.
Not content with simply telling readers about the wine, Jukes also offers advice on matching it to food, as well as presenting a comprehensive "gazetteer" which includes basic facts about wines of the world and their vintages, with the names of some of the top producers. A directory of UK wine merchants completes the picture.
This pocket-sized book makes a handy all-in-one reference for wine-lovers, rivalling other well-established wine annuals in both range and reliability. The true test will come with the publication of the second edition, but if that can live up to the standards set by the first, it will be another job well done.
