 Wine-mine review - March 2001
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: The Vintner's Luck
Midsummer 1808, and Burgundian winemaker Sobran Jodeau is visited by the mysterious Xas, bearing wine and tales of life and experience beyond the vineyards. The meeting recurs each year thereafter, and the intervening time brings ever-improving vintages and unexpected success. How much is Jodeau's luck due to the shadowy presence of Xas? And is Xas a guardian angel, or the devil in disguise?
Elizabeth Knox has created a novel as rich and complex as the finest examples of the classic Pinot Noir made by her main character. As the years pass, the reader gradually discovers the language of wine and the many trials of cultivating it in Burgundy - and unveils the depth and structure of Jodeau's various relationships with friends, family and benefactors.
The novel will reward further readings, to fully appreciate the nuance and subtlety of its assemblage - much like the vinophile's need to keep tasting in pursuit of the perfect bottle of red Burgundy!
An unusual opportunity to combine wine and fiction - sit back in your favourite chair with a good glass, this book - and enjoy!
