 Wine-mine review - May 2001
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book 2001 edition
Indispensable guide to wine, small enough to secrete in handbag or briefcase for surreptitious consultation, yet packed with vital information.
Hugh Johnson has been giving buyers the low-down on the latest in worldwide wine since 1977, and his easy-to-follow system introduces the principal international growing regions and their wares. Tips on vintages, brief alphabetical notes about producers and style, supplemented by excellent maps, provide a sound basis for the purchase of a reliable "drop".
There are also pithy sections on grape varieties, wine and its presentation, a useful lay person's glossary and several other points of interest. Although the typeface is necessarily small to fit the book's format, use of bold script, information boxes and some colour helps the reader to navigate successfully.
Johnson's easygoing, knowledgeable prose goes down a treat for the novice wine-buyer and the expert alike. We wouldn't be without it!
