 Wine-mine review - July 2002
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: The Great Wine Blight
Who would have thought that a louse, barely visible to the naked eye, could be responsible for wiping out 40% of France's vineyards and costing the country over twice as much as the war with Prussia.
This is a very thorough and detailed account of the hunt by scientists and wine makers in France, the UK and the US to find the cause of the mass destruction of vines in France and across Europe during the late nineteenth century. Once discovered, they then had the equally puzzling task of finding a cure for the problem.
This is a good story, written in a chatty style and with plenty of facts and figures for the curious. If you are keen to piece together some of the history of wine, then this would be a good one for the library.
