 Wine-mine review - August 2001
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a supplement column: Me and My Wine
In fact its not Tim Atkins own wine which gets the once-over each month in the Observers recently created food and drink supplement. Instead he investigates the wine habits of a well-known personality, and presents his findings with a couple of mouth-watering photos to enhance the writing.
Atkin has made a typically confident and engaging start in bringing celebrity wine-drinking to his readers. He successfully negotiates the potential minefield of name-dropping and one-upmanship which could so easily encroach on this enterprise. The result is an enjoyable column which doesnt condescend to the audience.
So far Philip Schofield, Bob Willis, Loyd Grossman and Dr Miriam Stoppard have all revealed the secrets of their cellars. The fascination lies in learning how they got involved with wine (cue anecdotes galore), what they enjoy quaffing, what gets laid down for the future, and what their favourite bottles happen to be. Given the likely disposable incomes of the interviewees, readers may be surprised to note that not all the bottles mentioned require a second mortgage to purchase.
At this juncture, all of Atkins subjects have come across as genuine enthusiasts with very open minds where wine is concerned, and this gives readers a welcome chance to see the participants in a different light. As the OFM picks up speed it will be interesting to see how this feature develops, especially in terms of who is chosen to divulge the contents of their cellar.
