Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a TV programme: BBC 'Food & Drink'
 Oz Clarke is already familiar to many as the authoritative writer of several wine books, and he has become a permanent fixture on the BBC's popular flagship food programme. Since the departure of infamously loquacious sidekick Jilly Goolden, Oz has made the wine segment his own by providing enthusiasm and reliable information to the wine-drinking public.
The current format has Oz asking a small group of lucky acquaintances to road-test four bottles with a common theme. Recent instalments have featured English wines and international Cabernet Sauvignon. After tasting and discussion, the top wine is chosen. Information about price and availability is shown during the segment, and is also on the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk/food/foodanddrink.
As the participants taste, Oz takes the opportunity to point out what they should expect from the wine if it's a good example of its type. This informal yet instructive approach is helpful, and viewers should come away from it with two or three key ideas to remember about the bottles in question. Occasionally the presenter's passion for his subject leads him to overstate the case for a particular wine, but the overall quality of the information given is more than adequate compensation for such indulgence.
Anyone who drinks wine in the UK can learn from Oz's lively presentations. For those who would like to broaden their tasting horizons but tend to buy from mainstream sources in supermarkets or the high street, the wine segment of "Food and Drink" is a must-see for its useful guidance. So why not give some of Oz's recommendations a try?
