 Wine-mine review - October 2002
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: Jancis Robinson's Guide to Wine Grapes
This is an essential pocket-sized book for any self-respecting wine lover. As one has come to expect from anything written by Robinson, this is a very thorough, handy reference guide to all the grape varieties that you can think of, and many, many more besides. The contents are arranged alphabetically with a useful red or white grape symbol beside each entry 'useful' to prevent any embarassing faux pas!
Each entry covers a reasonable amount of detail, often explaining the variety's origins, main plantings around the world, pseudonyms, styles of wine produced, and favoured growing conditions. Towards the end of the book, Robinson also has a section on the grapes behind the names. For example: the grape behind the famous Sassicaia of Tuscany is Cabernet Sauvignon. That behind Bonnezeaux of the Loire is Chenin Blanc.
We recommend this book and make use of it frequently, so why not add it to your wine shelf?
