 Wine-mine review - December 2001
Digging up great ideas for wine lovers...
This month we reviewed a book: Eating & Drinking
In Eating & Drinking, prolific wine writer Fiona Beckett has addressed a problem familiar to diners everywhere, whether entertaining at home or out with friends: how to match food and drink to good effect. While not exclusively about wine, the book nonetheless recognises that this is the most likely drink to accompany dining.
Consequently there is a short reference section to some of the basics about wine styles and grapes, as an appetiser before reaching the main course.
This takes the form of a dictionary, and it's easy to look up different ingredients, aromas or food styles in order to see what is recommended as an accompanying beverage. There are helpful instructions as to how to get the most out of the book, as well as plenty of pragmatic reassurance that nothing is set in stone. Once you start delving into the possibilities, the mouth waters and it's a gourmet pleasure to skip from one food to another as the mood takes you. Beckett's style is light and informal, putting even the most apprehensive reader at ease with a potentially challenging subject.
The book is strikingly presented, lime green and orange being the predominant colours along with black or white. This works most of the time, except where orange type or illustration has gone onto a green page
the result being a mild strobe effect which can be slightly off-putting. Oddly enough green on orange works a treat!
However this is a small consideration when taken beside the rich gems of advice contained within. Anybody looking for assistance with food and drink matching would do well to turn to Fiona Beckett's book. If nothing else, it inspires adventure and imagination in the wide world of taste experiences!
