Made in Surrey on the same soil, in the same climate and using the same grapes as Champagne, and named after Christopher Merret, the Englishman who first recorded the method of making sparkling wine in the mid 17th century, this wine is celebrated as one of the finest examples of the UK's sparkling wines.
The wine has a very pale straw-coloured appearance. Its mousse is somewhat unusual since despite there being an abundance of fine bubbles, they tend to form a blanket on the surface of the wine. The Merret's aroma is something akin to metal and latrines with a touch of yeast and apples. Unripe apples dominate the taste of this wine. It is not too dry, though it is a little acidic and the length of finish is a little disappointing. A pretty good Champagne copy and certainly pleasant enough to quaff on any occasion. |
