This Champagne House was established in 1849 and is still family-owned. Pol Roger champagne was Sir Winston Churchill's favourite champagne. There was such an affiliation that after his death the Champagne House placed a black band around the label of their white foil champagnes as a mark of respect and later launched the Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill cuvée. The current wine-maker is James Coffinet and unusually, the vintage champagnes are made with just two of the three typical Champagne grapes; 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.
The appearance of this wine could be described as dark caramel. It is very bright and clear with a good mousse comprising very many constant fine bubbles. Its aroma is very intense; something akin to Bovril or iodine, which is rather off-putting. The palate shows great balance in the wine and it is quite flat-tasting and soft, which is very different from the fizz and froth of younger wines. The mouthfeel is powerful and rich and the length is impressive. The extra age and the higher percentage of Pinot Noir give this champagne its powerful structure and set it apart from the other wines. A treat if you can afford it. |
