JQWine Review - 12 6 2002
It's all about having fun & learning about wine.

This week's wine was:

Pol Roger Vintage Brut
Producer: Pol Roger
Origin: Epernay, France
Vintage: 1990 (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay)
Price: £34.99
Bought in: widely available in fine wine merchants

It can be hard to find excellent vintage Champagne. Many fail to live up to the anticipation. This, however, is a cracker and well worth the money. Its appearance could be described as dark caramel. The wine is very bright and clear with a good mousse comprising very many constant fine bubbles. (a sign of wine made in the 'traditional method'.)

On the nose, Its aroma is very intense; something akin to Bovril or iodine, which is rather off-putting. But don't let it delay your first taste.

The palate shows great balance in the wine. It is flat-tasting and soft which will come as a surprise to most people used to drinking young non vintage Champagnes and sparklers. The bottle ageing has dampened the fizz and removed the often-harsh acidity. Ageing has not, however, removed any of the punch. The wine has a powerful taste and feels rich in the mouth. It has fabulous length.

The extra age and the higher percentage of Pinot Noir give this champagne its powerful structure and set it apart from the other wines. A treat if you can afford it.
