Hermitage is one of the 8 AC Crus in the northern Rhône. It lies to the east of the Rhône river and the vineyards are on the steep slopes of the hill of Hermitage above Tain and Tournon. This particular wine, made by Paul Jaboulet Ainé, is considered to be a very fine example and 1983 was an excellent vintage. Experts consider it to be drinking 'à point' right now. Jaboulet is the most successful and go-ahead négociant in the Rhône Valley and owns 28 hectares in the Hermitage appellation. Each year the company produces and sells 2 million bottles of its various Rhône wines.
This wine, made from 100% Syrah, contains all the hallmarks of a textbook northern Rhône Syrah. The colour is a tawny brown with a pinky pale rim. On the nose it exudes a whole array of aromas including smoky, meaty, savoury notes as well as bramble fruits, raspberries and vanilla and perhaps a hint of recent pencil shavings. When tasted, this wine is dry, firm and full-bodied. It is full of ripe blackberries and raspberries and has a texture that is silky smooth. All of its constituent parts are well-integrated and the length of finish is powerful and remarkably long.
An absolute gem and well worth hunting down for a treat! |
