This wine is not from the northern Rhône, but Christophe Reynouard, the winemaker at this family-owned domaine, learnt his craft in the home of Viognier (Condrieu in the northern Rhône) under the tutelage of Georges Vernay. Domaine du Grangeon Viognier wines are made from low yielding vines. The wine is aged partly in new oak barrels and partly in 2-year old casks, but bottled young to retain the beautiful perfume of the Viognier grape.
Reynouard's wine bears the hallmarks of the variety with a clear gold, luminescent appearance. Its nose is reasonably intense with aromas of apricot blossom, peach kernel and honeysuckle. In the mouth, the wine is dry with balanced acidity. The full body and unctuousness of the wine is tempered by the acid to maintain freshness, and to allow the summer stone fruit flavours and gentle aromatic spice to come to the fore. The finish is reasonably long, but fails to have the staying power of a real superstar. A beauty, nonetheless. |
