The Badia (abbey) is over 1,000 years old and has been owned by the Stucchi-Frinetti family for the past 150 years. It is here in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany that the family produces this marvellous example from old Sangiovese and Canaiolo vines. Deep plum and cherry in the glass with a clean fresh nose of cherries, violets and vanilla, this wine positively invites the quaffer to take a slurp.
It is a dry wine with relatively high acidity. Oodles of fruit come through on the palate - cherry, damson, mulberry - and its medium body, soft tannins and good length of finish all add up to a lovely glass of wine. We found this to be a perfect match with the liver and bacon casserole as it had a enough acidity to cut through the richness of sauce, but was soft enough and fruity enough to allow the flavour of the liver to come through. |
